The Cons and Pros
Although marijuana is legal now in Canada and most of the United States, there’s still some “Nay Sayers” trying desparately to convince you it’s bad.
The Cons
In early times, before the second world war, marijuana, cannabis, hemp, call it what you will, was all lumped into the same group by society as cannabis and given the same prejudice we still see today. The opposing population in the early 1900’s say it needed approval by the Food and Drug Administration becuase the active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol(THC) was too dangerous to use and with all the newer drugs coming out, precsribed drugs from a physician would render cannabis redundant. They say marijuana is addictive, leads to harder drug use, interferes with fertility, impairs driving ability, and injures the lungs, immune system, and brain. Not only did they neglect to mention the over 25,000 different uses for the cellulose of this robust plant but also the 5000 different textile products from it’s thread-like fiber. In the beginning,it was made illegal because of it’s mood altering properties and was thought to make users wild and violent and listen to devils music.
The Pros
Marijuana goes back thousands of years and up until the year 1883, was once the largest crop in the world because of it’s many uses. In the latter half of the 19th century,50% of the medicines marketed came from cannabis. Even Queen Victoria herself used the beneficial extract for relief of menstrual cramps. In the early part of 20th century American newspapers and other social media with little or no fact-based proof began depicting all forms of cannabis, and it’s users in a most derogitory light. 1937 the Marijuana Tax Act was born, allowing a grower to buy a stamp, but the government wasn’t issuing any,so it pretty much stayed illegal until the start of the second world war when the government released a viedo: “Hemp for victory “and once again seen it as a good thing. Of course when the war ended, hemp once again became a bad thing. By the end of 1948,congress realized cannabis had a passive effect on it’s users, which was exactly the opposite of why it was outlawed in the first place.
The Hidden Truth
In 1974 the Heath Tulane study was released and when asked about decriminalizing marijuana,California Governor Ronald Reagan announced,“The most reliable scientific sources say permanent brain damage is an inevitable result from the use of marijuana” .The announcement was based on the results of monkeys wearing gas masks that were pumped the equivalent of 30 joints a day developed atrifein after 90 days and died from brain cell damage. What they didn’t tell us until some 6 years later was that instead of administering 30 joints a day for 1 year,Dr. Heath used a method of pumping 63 joints through a gas mask within 5 minutes over three months. In other words the brain damage was caused by suffocation, but went on to associate it with marijuana consumption
New Developments
Today marijuana has shown amazing results on patients with cancer, multiple sclerosis,Aids, epilepsy, pain and many other diseases. An article in Forbes ,2018 stated for people with Type 1 diabetes, The Diabetes Council research has found that CBD can reduce the occurrence and delay the onset of the disease. Furthermore, the THC enzyme has been found to suppress the autoimmune response of the disease, reducing the amount of insulin needed during treatment. People suffering from Type 2 diabetes that use CBD may fix an endocannabinoid imbalance that makes it harder for people to lose weight, which is an important step in treating Type 2 Diabetes, And, CBD may also help reduce insulin resistance, the crucial mechanism that causes the disease to progress.
The Future
Amongst all that we hear on the news today and what we read in the papers can no longer be taken on our assumption it’s always going to be true. We have to take control of our own lives and start questioning the reliability of our sources. Then following up with research on that source to confirm our beliefs. That way you’ll have a better understanding on how to make the right healthy choices for you and your family for many years to come.
